Muzzle Conditioning | Jeff Gellman Seminars

A video showing how to muzzle condition an aggressive dog, or any dog for the matter. This was done at a seminar with 15 other dogs, 25 people, with a dog that was not engaged with me at all and I just met. This dog also wanted to bite me-just to put things into perspective.

Muzzle conditioning should be done in a quiet room, with the dog and handler, and very little distractions. I wanted to show the attendees how to safely muzzle condition a dog that has intent to harm and bites at sight of the muzzle. We do this daily at our training center (tie back varies depending on the level of safety with the dog), but we have found that rewarding outside of the muzzle has given us better results. We don’t want to bribe a dog to put a muzzle on, we want the dog to WANT to wear the muzzle. That’s why we have focused on this patterning of behaviors specifically.

This video shows what a good first session would ideally look like. I just want the dog to start associating touching the muzzle as a good thing. This process absolutely takes multiple sessions, I just had to move quickly for educational purposes. Take your time with muzzle conditioning. The more comfortable the dog is in a muzzle, the better the training will be all around. We utilize muzzles a ton at our training center for behavior modification. We like dogs to enjoy wearing them.
