Number 10. Neapolitan Mastiff

An Italian dog breed, the Neapolitan mastiff was originally seen as a guard dog in central Italy. Also known as Mastino Napoletano in its home country, the Neapolitan mastiff was originally recognised as a dog breed back in 1949, eventually being accepted by the Federation Cynologique Internationale in ‘56. Closely related to the Cane Corso, this very large dog can weigh upwards of 150 pounds and stand taller than 30 inches when fully grown. Large dogs like the neapolitan mastiff aren’t a new thing in Italy, where big dogs have been standard favourites for centuries. These dogs have a lot of loose skin that hangs in heavy wrinkles all over their bodies. Their coats are usually black and grey, but sometimes have a range of colours. Neapolitan mastiffs don’t live very long, which is probably due to their extreme size. They live an average of 7 years, but do sometimes live to around 9 years. Intimidating and loyal, these dogs don’t really take to strangers and are wary of people they don’t know. Close relatives to the neapolitan mastiff were being used as guard dogs since the days of ancient Rome, giving them a long and storied history.

Number 9. French Mastiff

Also called the dogue de bordeaux, the french mastiff is a very large french dog and is also one of the oldest of all french dog breeds. These dogs are extremely powerful and have ridiculously muscular bodies, serving to make them seem even more intimidating. They were originally used extensively as work dogs thanks to their size and strength. Most often they were used to pull carts or haul heavy objects. They’re also very smart and were even used to help guard flocks and even castles of the rich and powerful. Around since at least the fourteenth century, these dogs became very popular both in france and abroad when it was first exhibited in 1863. A dog similar to the french mastiff was known during the reign of julius caesar, suggesting that the two might be close cousins. Others believe that the dogue de bordeaux is a descendant of another french dog, the dogue de bordeaux of Aquitaine. A small group is also sure that they might be a relative of the tibetan mastiff. Whatever the dog’s lineage, it’s clear that this breed is capable and impressive, able to hold its own or pull its weight as needed.

Number 8. Leonberger

A giant dog breed that hails from Leonberg, Germany, the leonberger was often said to mimic the lion in the town’s coat of arms. An amazing working dog, the leonberger is also a great family dog. They have long double coats that hide their muscular frame. These dogs are very large and very intimidating, but are also exceptionally smart and easy to train. They are amazingly loyal and will always stick up for the ones they love. They’re also fairly good with strangers and aren’t usually prone to unwarranted acts of aggression. These dogs can weigh up to 170 pounds and stand over 31 inches tall, making them one of the taller dogs on today’s list. Their water-resistant coat is complemented by diner hair on the muzzle and legs, with the main coat being relatively flat and straight. These dogs come in all colours, with most being yellow, red, brown, or sandy.
